Heads Up: King of Fighters XII Unveiled!

kofxiirevealheader.jpg

Hot off the show floor of AOU 2008 (an exclusively arcade platform trade show), SNK Playmore has steathily revealed King of Fighters XII via video. While Capcom, much to the chagrin of fans everywhere, decided to go for a 2.5D graphics engine for Street Fighter IV, King of Fighters XII is still entirely sprite based.

SNK is using the Taito Type X2 arcade board to deliver HD sprites that are brilliantly animated, along with fantastically animated backgrounds that are full of life.

For those ready to be blown away, we have included a Youtube version of the video here.

The game is set to hit Japanese arcades near the end of this year, with console versions hitting in 2009. There’s still no word of a US release of either the arcade or home console versions, but considering KOFXI’s recent release in the United States on the Playstation 2, a stateside appearance seems rather likely.

I’ve been a huge SNK fanboy since I played Samurai Shodown 2 almost 11 years ago and this is like seeing your beloved sports team finally winning the championship.

Too bad I won’t get to play this for 2 years probably :(

Indeed. Although it’s bothered me that numbering the KOF series by years is long gone, it pleases me to see SNK not only look toward the future, but to take some of their older concepts that made them so big to begin with and bring it to the future with them.

SNK has also taken a large interest in the US console market as of late, which seems kind of odd when compared to other JP companies, but I’m sure as hell not complaining. Bring it on!
