It’s not every day one of your favorite gaming franchises sees the light of day as a table top board game. While a Metal Gear board game would make my day, Konami has yet to put that plan in motion. Instead, I found myself in Den Den Town last weekend, where I picked up a copy of of the Dragon Quest board game: Dragon Quest Dungeon R.
The game works largely like a cross between a simplified Dungeons and Dragons, and Battleship. There are three modes, but the most familiar to me is the long play mode, where both players create dungeons, and then both players play their opponents’ dungeons, taking turns. A player moves until he hits a wall, and then his turn ends. If he encounters a monster of a chest, he resolves the situation, and continues.

NOTE: I haven’t opened my copy yet, so all pictures are provided by Board Game Geek.
The board game has a very very steep price tag, clocking in at 5800円, but for Dragon Quest fans and collectors, this limited edition board game might actually be worth the price. Once Eric from BoR and I dig into the board game in December, we’ll let you know how it really is.
